Yosemite/Mariposa County Tourism Bureau has been awarded the Destiny Award in the Interactive Marketing category for its social media presence, “Yosemite Nation.”
The award, given by the National Council of Destination Organizations (NCDO), is designed to recognize members of the U.S. Travel Association for excellence and creative accomplishment in travel marketing and promotion, through imaginative and innovative destination marketing promotion programs and activities, according to a news release from the tourism bureau.
“Yosemite Nation” consists of a number of social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and a blog. Using those social networks in concert gives the bureau numerous ways to communicate with people. Facebook, Twitter and the blog are used as vehicles to inform and relay news about Yosemite and Mariposa County to the fans, in addition to creating awareness about the area and exclusive offers to “Yosemite Nation” followers.
In the past year, the number of “Yosemite Nation” Facebook members grew by 20,000, there was a 138 percent increase in Twitter followers, blog readership increased by 75percent and more than 1,000 photos were uploaded to Flickr, the news release said. The county experienced a 7.8 percent increase in visitation, overnight stays increased from 1.8 nights to 2.6 nights and the past year brought more than 4 million visitors to the county — the highest number in the past 14 years.
