A Mariposa County tax office employee is accused of embezzling $104,000 over six years.
Mary Patricia Moretti, 56, of Mariposa, was arrested after a month-long investigation by the Mariposa County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Doug Binnewies said in a press release Moretti embezzled money from the county’s transient occupancy tax program. The transient occupancy tax is fee added to the cost of an overnight stay in Mariposa’s hotels and motels and is one of the primary funding sources for Mariposa’s tourism-based economy.
The investigation started on Feb. 13 after the sheriff's department received a report from Mariposa County Tax Collector Keith Williams. Investigators found a number of violations, starting in Sept. 2006.
Moretti's name was removed this week from the Mariposa Tax Collector's website, but her LinkedIn profile lists her as the county's assistant treasurer, tax collector and county clerk.
District Attorney Bob Brown said his office filed a 71-count complaint Tuesday in Mariposa County Superior Court against Moretti.Moretti was arrested Tuesday without incident and booked into the Mariposa County Detention Facility, where she's being held on $100,000 bail. Charges against Moretti include burglary, grand theft, embezzlement by clerk, embezzlement by government clerk, forgery and altering government documents.
She's scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning in Mariposa County Superior Court.
