Police say a woman was shot in downtown Merced early Friday after she confronted someone trying to break into her car.
The incident happened about 6 a.m. in the 100 block of East Main Street.
According to a department news release, officers arrived and located the victim, who had a gunshot wound to her upper torso. She was treated by paramedics and taken to a regional hospital for treatment.
The victim said that before the shooting, she looked outside her residence and saw an unidentified person breaking the window of her vehicle.
The woman went outside and confronted the suspect. Then another person who was in the yard of the residence, shot the victim.
Both suspects then quickly left the area and fled in an unknown direction, the release said.
Later Friday, at 9:15 a.m. officers responded back to the same area for a shots fired call. Police said someone had driven by and fired shots. Bullets hit a vehicle parked in the driveway and the home. No one was inside when the shooting happened, police said in the release.
Police said they are looking into whether the two incidents are related.
