17-year-old injured in gang-related Atwater shooting

A 17-year-old juvenile is recovering after a shooting reported Friday in the 1300 block of High Street, Atwater police reported.

No suspects are in custody, and the victim has already been released from the hospital, according to Detective Armando Echevarria. Police said the crime is believed to be gang-related.

Police responded to the scene shortly before 9 p.m. The victim reported stepping outside and seeing a small silver four-door car drive by. The car then returned, stopped and an occupant got out of the vehicle and fired.

The victim, who is also believed to be gang-affiliated, was struck once in the arm. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced and treated, Echevarria said. No suspect description is available, and police said it's unknown how many people were inside the car.

Echevarria said the shooting is the second since September to occur at the same home. Three arrests were made in the September shooting.

Atwater police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Detective Adolfo Lomeli at (209) 357-6387 or the department’s automated tip-line at (209) 357-6390. Calls are kept confidential, and you can remain anonymous.
