A 25-year-old man is recovering after being shot Monday night in the 15000 block of Oak Street in Delhi, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported.
No suspects are in custody, and the motive remains unclear. Detectives said the victim has no known gang ties or affiliations.
The incident was reported at 8:20 p.m. after nearby residents had called 911 about several shots that had been fired. Minutes later, dispatchers received a call about the victim, who had driven to the home of a relative for help, about a mile away from where he was shot, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman.
Deputies arrived at the home and found the victim with gunshot wounds to his left hand and right arm. The victim was in pain and wasn't able to provide much information to deputies. He told deputies he was seated in a car and was approached by a Latino male pointing a gun, ordering him out of the vehicle.
As the victim tried to drive away, the assailant fired several rounds.
Although the victim reported seeing only one assailant, witnesses told deputies there were four or five suspects, saying they fled in a gray four-door car.
The victim was taken to a Modesto hospital and is expected to recover.
Deputies are asking witnesses or anyone with information to call the Sheriff's Department at (209) 385-7472.
