GV hits 15 threes, moves on to finals

TRACY -- Golden Valley doesn't hide what it's trying to do on the basketball court.

The Cougars are going to run and slash and press and bomb away and they dare all opponents to keep up.

Friday night, host West High of Tracy never found that pace, as GV rolled to a 17-point halftime lead and dropped in 15 3-pointers en route to a 92-62 victory in the semifinals of the 20th annual Tracy Tournament.

The Cougars' victory sets up an all-Central California Conference final tonight -- the first in this tournament's history -- with Turlock providing the competition at 7:30 p.m. at West High.

Golden Valley (9-1) plays a prep version of the scramble style made so popular the last decade at Fresno City College, and the Cougars run it so well that the Wolfpack spent the first half trying to find senior guard Alex Fletcher on the court, with little success.

"We like to take 25 3-pointers every game and we're pretty good at it," said GV coach Keith Hunter. "When they go in, it's a pretty thing."

Fletcher had 19 points in the opening 16 minutes to lead GV to a 46-29 halftime lead. He finished with seven 3-pointers and 29 points as the Cougars never were challenged in the second half.

MANTECA 90, BUHACH COLONY 60 -- The Buffaloes (8-2) opened the game with a 25-0 run, cruising to the victory over the Thunder (7-4). Dominique Barnes and Ernie Pimentel each led Manteca with 17 points. Hodari Peterson led Buhach Colony with 16 points.

Manteca and Livingston will meet for fifth place today at West High at 3 p.m. Buhach Colony and Tracy will play for seventh place today at 10:30 a.m.

LIVINGSTON 67, TRACY 56 -- Harnarinder Johal scored 22 points and Dorian Campos added 14 as the Wolves (9-2) toppled the Bulldogs in a consolation game. Cameron Jackson had a game-high 24 points for Tracy.

Livingston jumped out to a 19-11 lead after the first quarter and cruised from there.

The Wolves play Manteca for fifth place today at 3 p.m. in a game featuring two high-scoring offenses. The Thunder and the Bulldogs will meet for seventh place at 10:30 a.m.

CHAVEZ 75, JOHANSEN 66 -- Deonne Jackson scored 24 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Titans ran past the Vikings. Dakan King led Johansen with 11 points and Eric Chavez added 10.

The Vikings play Ceres for 11th place today at West High at 1:30 p.m.

LOS BANOS 54, WESTON RANCH 51 -- Andrae Jones scored 22 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Tigers held off the Cougars in a consolation game. Nathan Moises led Weston Ranch with 15 points.

Los Banos plays Tokay for 13th place today at West High at noon. Weston Ranch and Modesto will meet in the 15th-place game at 9 a.m.
