Beyer boys schooled by Taft

SALIDA -- When the Beyer High boys basketball team registered for the Modesto Christian Holiday Hoops Classic, the object was to play high-quality teams with an eye on the future.

The Patriots got a taste of that high quality in Friday's first round, when they were trounced 89-40 by Taft of Woodland Hills at Modesto Christian. The Toreadors aren't just a good team; last year, they won the Los Angeles Section Division I championship.

Beyer was never in the game; it fell behind 9-0 in the first few minutes, and trailed 51-18 at the half.

"We've never played a team that good," said Beyer center Bryan Garbez, who scored 14 points. "We went in thinking we had nothing to lose. They just took it to us."

Beyer plays East Bakersfield, a 64-58 loser to Skyline of Oakland, in a consolation game today at 2:30 p.m. Taft plays Skyline in a quarterfinal at 5:30 p.m.

Lucas Maddox led Beyer with 16 points, followed by Garbez's 14. Michael Williams scored 18 points for Taft. The Toreadors saw 13 of the 15 players on their roster score points.

"Playing in a tournament like this is going to get us ready for the MMC," Garbez said. "We won't see any other teams like some of the ones we'll see in this tournament.

"This is getting us prepared for the rest of the season."

SACRAMENTO 66, RIPON 51 -- The Indians hung tough with the Dragons through the first half -- Sacramento only led 27-24 -- but the defending Northern California Division III champion pulled away thanks to a 25-8 third quarter.

Trevan Abraham led the Dragons with 27 points, followed by Chase Tapley's 24 points. Matt Ratto led Ripon with 19 points, including five of his team's nine 3-pointers. Dane Wells added 17 points.

Ripon plays Clovis East in a consolation game today at 1 p.m.

SAN LEANDRO 81, SHELDON 70 -- Jared Cunningham led the Pirates with 29 points, including 21 in the second half, as San Leandro held off the Huskies. Darius Nelson led Sheldon with 23 points before he was ejected in the third quarter.

Sheldon plays Turlock in a consolation game today at 11:30 a.m. San Leandro and Etiwanda meet up in a quarterfinal tonight at 7.

SKYLINE 64, EAST BAKERSFIELD 58 -- Nefi Perdomo scored 22 points, leading the Titans past the Blades. Davon Shelton scored 29 points to lead East Bakersfield.

SYLMAR 79, CLOVIS EAST 75 -- UCLA-bound forward Tyler Honeycutt scored 25 points and Gary Ricks added 22 as the Spartans beat the Timberwolves. Kevin Bailey (22 points), Robert Sandoval (20) and John Hedrington (18) led Clovis East.

INGLEWOOD 74, COLONY 61 -- James Brace scored 19 points and Dashawn Gomez added 16 as the Sentinels held off the Titans. Evan Brooks scored 21 and Gene Saulsberry 16 for Colony.

ETIWANDA 82, TURLOCK 49 -- The Bulldogs were led by Travis Souza's 25 points, but defending champion Etiwanda's balanced roster was too much.
