Annual Kids' Day collection has concluded

It's all over but for the counting.

Modesto Bee employees and volunteers were out in force today on Modesto street corners selling the special Kids' Day edition of the paper for $1. The promotion is an annual fundraiser for Salvation Army Red Shield Center that benefits at-risk boys and girls.

Clad in red, hawkers worked the streets until about 1 p.m. today. The Bee and the Salvation Army are totaling receipts this afternoon. No information is available on how much was collected this year.

More than $600,000 has been collected on Kids' Day since 1997 — money generously donated from area business as well as people driving around town.

Of each dollar contributed, roughly a quarter covers The Bee's cost and the remainder - about 75 cents - goes to the Red Shield Center.
