Modesto high raises money for Project Ecuador

Modesto High School's Project Ecuador has reached its fund-raising goal of $10,000. The yearlong effort asked for donations to raise money to help build a school in Ecuador.

Students and helpers held several collection activities this school year. Students also formed "Change Gangs" collecting spare change during lunch on campus and at events.

Modesto High history teacher and co-organizer Mike Chiavetta estimates that more than half of the school's students and staff donated during the year. Participants will celebrate their feat Thursday after school.

Project Ecuador is a teacher- and student-run organization started this school year by Chiavetta and English teacher Jennifer Pereira. Chiavetta was inspired after reading "Three Cups of Tea," a novel about spreading peace one school at a time.
