Modesto Bee employees and volunteers were out in force Tuesday on Modesto street corners selling the special Kids' Day edition of the paper for $1. The promotion is an annual fundraiser for Salvation Army Red Shield Center that benefits at-risk boys and girls.
More than $600,000 has been collected on Kids' Day since 1997 — money generously donated from area business as well as people driving around town. This year about $62,550 was raised for the center, including nearly $10,000 Tuesday in sales of the special edition of The Bee.
Of each dollar contributed, roughly a quarter covers The Bee's cost and the remainder - about 75 cents - goes to the Red Shield Center.
