Grass fire keeps Modesto firefighters busy

A grass fire this morning just west of Highway 99 on Graphics Road kept Modesto Fire Department crews busy, and threatened some businesses.

But the roughly 12-acre fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes without any damage to structures, according to Modesto Fire Battalion Chief Rich Sasser.

The fire, which started at about 9:30 a.m. on the north end of the property, threatened Floors Plus and other businessses north of the corner of Graphics Drive and Kansas Avenue.

Sasser said employees for Floors Plus were evacuated for a short time.

Sasser said the manager of the property that runs next to Highway 99 was having a safety briefing as workers prepared to mow the dry grass when the fire broke out at the other end of the property.

Sasser said it’s up to property owners to keep their land clear and fire-safe, and the manager of that property was doing just that.

He said the cause of the fire is unknown.

The southerly winds did allow firefighters to let some of the dry brush burn to avoid future problems on the property.

Three engines, two brush rigs and two chief officers helped in containing the mid-morning blaze, Sasser said.
