Smaller than usual crowds for Memorial Day weekend showed up Saturday at Modesto and Woodward reservoirs, according to Stanislaus County sheriff's officials. The weather was cooler than last weekend, but plenty of swimmers and boats were in the water, said sheriff's Sgt. Paul Yotsuya. He said there were no drownings reported at either reservoir, and the calls for service were mostly for minor disputes between campers. The water is still cold, Yotsuya said, and swimmers should watch for signs of exhaustion, swim with a buddy, wear a life jacket and avoid clothing that retains water, such as denim. "Cold water can zap your energy as you swim," Yotsuya said. He reminded reservoir visitors that drinking alcohol in hot weather can result in dehydration.
