Day: puts fresh, wide-open eye on Turlock

While our name proudly proclaims we are The Modesto Bee, readers know that we cover more than just the largest city in Stanislaus County.

Every day we carry news and advertising from Manteca to Merced, Patterson to Sonora, and dozens of points in between. We wish could provide even more information for each community, but we only have so much space in the paper.

It's a different story on our Web site,, where we never run out of room.

We're taking advantage of that by launching a new section designed to serve the second largest city in our area, Turlock.

At, we gather all The Bee's content about Turlock — from news and sports stories to editorials to letters to the editor and other commentaries — and put them in one convenient place.

Merrill Balassone, our Turlock reporter, has launched the "Turlock Now" blog that you'll find in our new Turlock section or by going directly to

Further, we've loaded the Turlock section with pathways to a wide array of community resources, including links to city government, the Turlock Irrigation District, the Stanislaus County Fair, the schools, the police, the weather forecast, traffic conditions — and even the Turlock Journal, Turlock City News and The Signal student newspaper at California State University, Stanislaus.

As we refine the section in the weeks ahead, we're looking for bloggers who are writing about the community.

And, Turlock is the first of a number of sections we'll be adding on for other communities.

No matter where you live or work, we want you to know how important you are to us, both in print and online.

Day is managing editor/online. Contact him at or 578-2332.
