By the Numbers: Foster Care

— There are 75,000 children in foster care in California; 80 percent of them were removed from their homes because of neglect.

— About 45 percent of foster children have been in the system for more than two years; 17 percent have been in the system for more than three years.

— Juvenile dependency judges decide if allegations of abuse or neglect are true. They can terminate parental rights if parents are unable to provide a suitable home for a child.

— About 500 children are in foster care in Stanislaus County, and 700 children live with family members who act as legal guardians.

— Volunteers from Court Appointed Special Advocates of Stanislaus County act as advocates for about 50 foster care children each year.
