School's out ... Forever

Wednesday was the last day of the school year for Muncy Elementary School, but it was also the last day the elementary school was open.

Trustees voted in May to close Muncy School to trim $400,000 annually from the Stanislaus Union School District budget.

Trustees need to close a $3.7 million shortfall from the district's $30 million budget for the 2009-10 school year. Most of Muncy's 250 students will attend Chrysler and Eisenhut schools next year.

As the nation and state budgets worsen, more Stanislaus County school districts will consider closing campuses for the 2010-11 school year.
