Teen accused in baby death appears in court

Jessica Mae Betts, the 19-year-old Turlock woman charged with first-degree murder on suspicion of dumping her newborn daughter in a trash bin, made a quick appearance Tuesday in Stanislaus County Superior Court and won't return until Jan. 15.

The delay will give her court-appointed attorney time to review evidence. Betts' family members declined to comment after the hearing. On Nov. 8, Turlock police received a report that an infant had been found in a Dumpster at the Save Mart parking lot in the 1600 block of Lander Avenue.

The girl was warm to the touch but appeared to be dead when emergency crews arrived, police said. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Betts' mother named the baby Maria Mae Betts, according to the Stanislaus County coroner's office. The girl was buried at Ceres Cemetery last week.
