A young man was shot and seriously injured today at a group of auto repair shops just east of Highway 99 along Crows Landing Road in Modesto, authorities say.
Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputy Tom Letras said dispatchers received reports of shots being fired in the area about 10:30 a.m. Deputies arrived to find a wounded man believed to be in his late teens or early 20s. He was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery. He was reported in serious condition this evening.
Investigators searched a mobile home park south of the shooting site, believing the gunman had fled through the area. No one was found, Letras said. He added that investigators don't know whether the victim worked at the series of independently owned garages where he was shot, whether he was a customer or was merely passing through.
Letras said there was no indication that the shooting was gang related, nor was there any indication that it wasn't.
