Mike Harden might get a little more time in his new job than he expected if the suit fits as Modesto police chief.
Harden, the assistant chief, was named acting chief last month when Roy Wasden announced he would become Turlock's city manager.
Officials had said they wanted to do a national search for Wasden's successor within six to nine months.
A new round of budget cuts banks the savings from Wasden's departure for a full year, indicating that Harden would keep command of the department in that time.
Holding off on hiring a new chief is expected to save the city $269,036. Harden has said he intends to apply for the permanent chief post.
