Police arrest molestation suspect

A former Modesto resident was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of molesting a 9-year-old girl, the culmination of an investigation that took police to seven states over three years.

Modesto detectives arrested Richard Alan Cundy II, 51, who lives in Montana but stopped in Modesto during his truck route. Cundy is a truck driver, police said.

The girl was a relative of a friend of Cundy's, police Sgt. Brian Findlen said.

"We believe Mr. Cundy targeted children that were close to him, including extended family and friends," Findlen said. "His family and friends were in many different states."

The incident took place in 2006 in Modesto, police said. Detectives have since found four additional children from 9 to 17 years old from throughout the state and country who may have been victimized by Cundy, police said.

Detectives continue to investigate.

Cundy was found at a house on Hermosa Avenue, where he was arrested. He remained in custody at Stanislaus County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail Thursday evening.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Detective Eric Jones at 572-9500.
