Man pushing baby in stroller shot in Modesto's La Loma neighborhood

A man pushing a baby in a stroller alongside La Loma Avenue in Modesto was shot three times this morning by a gunman who approached in a car, police said.

The victim was taken to a Modesto hospital in serious condition and is undergoing treatment.

Police are looking for a man in a Silver Honda four-door sedan. The gunman was initially described as a Latino male with a long, braided pony tail and with tattoos on his upper body and neck. However, this afternoon police said the assailant was a white man in his 20s. The Latino man described was not involved.

The Honda was last seen going southbound on Santa Rosa Avenue.

The shooting occurred at about 11 a.m. as the man, in his 30s, walked with his girlfriend and baby in a stroller eastbound on the sidewalk on La Loma, said Modesto police Sgt. Brian Findlen.

Several shots were fired from the vehicle, which was westbound on La Loma, and the victim suffered three bullet wounds to the upper body.

The woman and baby were not injured even though, police spokesman Sgt. Brian Findlen said, it appeared a bullet struck the stroller.

Police said they believe the victim was targeted. Findlen said investigators think the suspect and the victim had at least one prior encounter.
