A man was killed in a solo vehicle crash near Atwater early this morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The crash was reported around 1:50 a.m. on Atwater Jordan Road, west of Steinberg Road, according to Shane Ferriera, CHP spokesperson. The identity of the victim, a man between 30 and 40 years old, hasn't been released, pending notification of his family.
The victim was driving a 1991 Mazda pickup truck eastbound on Atwater Jordan Road at an unknown speed. Ferriera said the car drifted to the right for unknown reasons, and entered the eastbound shoulder. The victim attempted to enter the eastbound lane, Ferriera said, but lost control.
The car traveled in a northeasterly direction across the westbound lane, overturning on the north dirt shoulder of Atwater Jordan Road. The victim was wearing a seat belt, but was ejected onto the north shoulder, Ferriera said.
The truck came to a rest on its wheels on the north dirt shoulder. The victim was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced and pronounced dead at 5:24 a.m., Ferriera said.
It's unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, Ferriera said.
