Modesto police said today they arrested a documented gang member after guns were found at his home in the 100 block of Roselawn Avenue.
Sgt. Brian Findlen said officers from narcotics and street crime teams served a search warrant at the home about 1:45 p.m. They arrested William Rodriguez, 29, of Modesto and detained what they described as several other gang members. Police did not identify the gang or gangs.
The search warrant was issued as part of investigation into gang activity and drug sales at the home, police said.
Officers recovered an assault rifle, a sawed-off shotgun and other firearms as well as more than half an ounce of methamphetamine, about an ounce of marijuana and more than $2,000 in cash.
Rodriguez was out on bail on charges stemming from his alleged involvement in an assault on a Modesto police officer March 29. During that incident, the officer was surrounded by a group of gang members after trying to break up a street fight. The incident was national news.
Rodriguez was arrested today on charges of possession of a controlled substance while in possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine for sale, possession of marijuana for sale, being a gang member in possession of a firearm, committing a felony while out on bail, possession of a prohibited weapon, and participation in a criminal street gang.
He will be booked at the Stanislaus County jail, Findlen said.
