Autopsy shows Oakdale boy's death consistent with bike injuries

OAKDALE -- Police are investigating the death of a 12-year-old boy who died from injuries in a bicycle accident late Wednesday.

Stanislaus County coroner officials identified the boy as Oakdale resident Raul Arellano. His family could not be reached for comment Friday.

The accident occurred about 9:30 p.m. in the area of Hinkley Avenue and West G Street, near Oakdale High School.

Oakdale police Sgt. Michael Eggener said the boy was riding his bike on the sidewalk and his mother was walking beside him.

"Somehow he just fell and hit the bike," Eggener said, adding that the boy suffered abdominal injuries. "It's just sad."

Police did not know how fast the boy was going or whether he was wearing safety gear. Eggener said there were no other vehicles or bicycles involved in the crash.

The boy went home after the accident. About 11:30 p.m., he complained to his mother that he had upper abdominal and lower chest pain, Eggener said.

The boy's parents took him to the emergency room at Oak Valley Hospital.

Eggener said the boy died at the hospital of complications from the injuries he sustained in the accident. Hospital officials notified police of the boy's death and the accident Thursday.

Coroner officials conducted an autopsy Friday, and Eggener said the preliminary results showed the boy's injuries were consistent with those one would suffer in a bicycle accident. There were no head injuries.

There was no indication of foul play or any pre-existing medical condition that contributed to the boy's death, Eggener said.

"That's what makes this so bizarre," Eggener said. "Our hearts go out to the family."
