Modesto mountaineer Royal Robbins and his son, Damon Robbins, took part in the 4th annual Read for the Record program on Thursday at the Stanislaus County Library.
The two read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" to a room full of children at the Stanislaus County Library. The book was written by Eric Carle, and chosen for the worldwide program to honor its 40th anniversary,
Numerous Read for the Record events took place on Thursday in Modesto, as well as cities and towns in and around the Northern San Joaquin Valley.
Among the readers included Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors Dick Monteith and Jeff Grover, Modesto Junior College football coach Sam Young and area city officlals, law enforcement officers and firefighters.

Read for the Record is an international campaign to bring children together with valued grownups in their lives to read the same book, on the same day, in communities all over the world.
Last year, more than 700,000 people participated in the event.
