Name: Manuel Rayas
Synopsis: Rayas, 28, of San Francisco was shot on June 10 at a birthday party in a southwest Modesto neighborhood. He was standing near the front door of a house in the 1300 block of Almaden Way off San Martin Drive on Saturday at 6:11 p.m. when a green Honda drove past and someone in the car fired several rounds, according to police. When officers arrived, family members were providing medical aid to Rayas, who was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
Authorities said Rayas was not a gang member and was in the county for the day only to attend the birthday party of a friend.
Motivation: Gang-related. The fatal shooting was the first of three shootings in south Modesto that occurred within 90 minutes and three-quarters of a mile of each other. Two others were injured in the attacks. The second shooting occurred at 6:18 p.m. in the 1700 block of Spokane Street at Colusa Avenue. A male standing in front of a house was shot in the leg, but his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, authorities said. The victim was not cooperating with investigators. Detectives believe the three suspects arrested in the fatal shooting and the green Honda were related to the shooting on Spokane Street, officials said.
