Meet the candidate: Elisa Godoy, Waterford Unified School District Board Trustee

What is your full, legal name?

Elisa M. Godoy

What name do you prefer be used in print?

Elisa Godoy

What office do you seek?

Waterford Unified School District Board Trustee

What is the primary reason you are running for this office?

Upon graduating from college with a Business degree, I decided to stay home to raise my 2 year-old toddler while working as a substitute teacher. During this time, I fell in love with the idea that I could make a difference in a student’s success in life through Education and felt the sense of duty and responsibility to serve, support and help improve our educational system ever since. I became an extensively involved parent serving in each of the three School Site Councils, in all three English Learners Advisory Committees and in various other school and district committees. Being a trustee would give me the capability of being part of opening more doors of opportunity for student success.

What will be your single most important priority if you get elected?

As an elected representative, it is my desire to be fiscally responsible, in the midst of budget cuts while supporting the superintendent in reaching student academic achievement goals. We can succeed by promoting the increase of Family-School-Community communication and involvement and by advocating a friendly and caring school climate because I believe every individual has the potential to make a positive impact to change, for the better, the life of a young person.

What sets you apart from the other candidates?

I believe my experience in the classroom, of over 10 years, as a substitute teacher, a teacher’s aide and a parent volunteer has given me knowledge and a clear understanding that is needed to make valuable contributions to the decision-making process of the Waterford Unified School Board.

Being bilingual has enabled me to better communicate with the Spanish speaking parents of our students. I believe that with improved communication between parents, staff and administration, there will be an increase of parental involvement of the latino community in our school district.
