A well known piano teacher of Modesto died Sunday after a two-month battle with West Nile illness.
Mary Cunningham Jones, 85, taught piano for 55 years in Modesto and was still teaching in her home studio in the Modesto Junior College area before the start of her illness in late August.
She became ill Aug. 28, the day after she noticed she was bitten by a mosquito outside her home in the Modesto Junior College area, said James Jones, her husband.
Her condition gradually worsened and she was admitted to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto on Sept. 2. She was in the hospital for six weeks, including four weeks in intensive care. She was released from the hospital last week to honor her wishes to spend her last days at home, her husband.
Her death was the fourth fatality from West Nile in California this year. One of the other fatalities was a Merced man who died from the mosquito-borne illness in September.
