Modesto's Renner nominated for prestigious SAG Award

Modesto actor Jeremy Renner has impressed his peers.

That fact was cemented this morning when the 1989 Beyer High graduate was nominated for a prestigious Screen Actors Guild Award.

Renner won the nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his critically acclaimed performance in "The Hurt Locker." He played Staff Sgt. William James in the gripping Iraq war drama.

Other nominees in that category are Jeff Bridges ("Crazy Heart"), George Clooney ("Up in the Air"), Colin Firth ("A Single Man") and Morgan Freeman ("Invictus").

The movie also won a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, joining "An Education", "Inglorious Basterds", "Nine" and "Precious: Based on the novel "Push" in that category.

Of the top industry accolades presented to performers, only the Screen Actors Guild Awards are selected solely by actors' peers.

Two days ago, "The Hurt Locker" won Golden Globe Awards nominations for best motion picture (drama) and best screenplay. The movie's director, Kathryn Bigelow, also was nominated for best director.

The SAGs and the Globes are considered a bellwether in the movie-making industry for Academy Award contenders.

Last weekend, Renner took home the best actor award from the Boston Society of Film Critics and was nominated in the Broadcast Film Critics Association's Critics' Choice Movie Awards for his role as Staff Sgt. William James in the gripping Iraq war drama.

"The Hurt Locker" won top film honors from the Boston critics group, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and, on Monday, the New York Film Critics Circle. It also was announced as among the nominees in the Broadcast Film Critics Association awards.

Renner has been riding high through this year's award season for his "Hurt Locker" work. He won the breakthrough actor award from the Gotham Awards, was nominated for best actor in the Independent Spirit Awards and has picked up several similar honors from other film groups and festivals across the country.

The 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards show is Jan. 23 at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center. It will be televised by TNT and TBS at 8 p.m.
