No new details have been released in the case of a man who was stabbed to death Monday in South Merced.

The victim's name hasn't been released by the Merced County Coroner's Office, and investigators are still trying to locate his family. Thus far, he's only been identified as a Latino male in his mid-30s, according to Detective Joe Deliman, the lead investigator in the case.

The man died after being stabbed around 6 p.m. Monday on 12th Street, less than a block southeast of G Street. No suspects are in custody, and police say the stabbing occurred during a robbery attempt.

The victim was walking with a friend from a nearby convenience store. The pair was confronted by two male suspects, who demanded their goods, according to Sgt. Alan Ward.

The pair told the robbers that they didn't have anything -- but the suspects didn't believe them. One of the robbers pulled out a knife, stabbing the victim several times. Meanwhile, the victim's friend fled on foot and the robbers ran away.

The victim was transported to a hospital, but died less than three hours later.

Police said the robbers are described as two Latino male adults, one wearing a red coat.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the crime to call Detective Joe Deliman at (209) 385-6992 or the department's automated tip-line at (209) 385-4725. Callers can remain anonymous.
