Would-be bandits botch Modesto motel stickup

Police investigators were looking for three armed men who tried to rob a northwest Modesto motel this afternoon. No shots were fired, and no one was hurt -- and evidently no money was taken.

The attempted robbery occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. at the Super 8 Motel at 1400 Salida Blvd., just west of Highway 99 and south of Pelandale Avenue.

The three men were armed with handguns and wearing masks when they walked into the motel lobby, said Sgt. Brian Findlen, a Modesto police spokesman.

He said the robbers demanded cash from the clerk behind the front counter. The clerk did not comply and ran to safety inside the motel.

Findlen said the robbers then left the motel, and it appeared they did so without stealing anything.

The robbers left in a light-colored four-door car, possibly a Nissan or Honda. The car had a spoiler in the back and customized chrome rims.

The car was last seen heading north on Salida Boulevard.

Police ask anyone with information about this attempted robbery to call Crime Stoppers at 521-4636.
