A Turlock woman is suspected of getting greedy and paying the price.
Turlock police said Cindy Hughes, 44, walked into Wayside Market in Turlock and stole a pack of D-cell batteries at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Store employees apparently saw her, but she was able to get away, according to Lt. Jeff Lopes. An hour later, she came back to the store at 735 Wayside Drive.
Employees reported that they watched her steal more batteries, then go to the counter to buy a pack of cigarettes. As she was making the purchase, an employee locked the front door and called police.
Hughes, who has a prior theft conviction, was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on felony theft charges, Lopes said.

"When they asked her why she stole the batteries if she had enough money for the cigarettes," Lopes said, "she said she thought she could get the batteries without being seen."
