Sonora police arrest stabbing suspects

Officers arrested two men believed to have been involved in a stabbing after they fought Tuesday evening at a park near the Sonora Police Department.

The incident began about 6 p.m. at Courthouse Park. Sonora police Chief Mark Stinson said Justin White, 30, of Sonora was at the park with a 29-year-old woman who is a transient. Police did not release the woman's name.

Based on information from the people involved and witnesses, officers learned Robert Adams, 26, also a transient, approached White and the woman at the park. Stinson said the woman has a restraining order against Adams. He said Adams started making comments about the woman and White, who started walking away. Adams followed and continued antagonizing them. Adams and White then started fighting before White pulled out a small pocketknife and stabbed Adams once, according to police. The fight ended, and White and the woman continued walking away.

Stinson said Adams continued following and yelling at them until they got close to the Police Department.

Officers responded to a report of a verbal disturbance and found Adams bleeding from a small puncture wound on his stomach. Adams was taken by ambulance to Sonora Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Adams was arrested on suspicion of violating a court order and fighting in public. White was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
