RIPON — A man woke up early Friday to find two unknown men burglarizing his apartment, police said.
The suspects drank beer and ate some food before the victim awoke and startled them, said Lt. Ed Ormonde, a Ripon police spokesman. The suspects ran out but were later arrested by officers.
Ormonde said Eric Covarrubias, 19, and Augustin Covarrubias, 20, both of Manteca, were arrested on suspicion of burglary. The men are not brothers, he said, and it was unclear whether they are related.
The burglary occurred at an apartment complex in the 200 block of South Jack Tone Road in Ripon.
Police believe the suspects were at the complex attending some type of gathering before they broke into the victim's apartment.
Ormonde said the suspects consumed the beer and food and had placed some items from the home by the front door before they were discovered.
About 3:30 a.m., the victim woke up and found the two men in his home. The surprised suspects left the apartment without taking anything, Ormonde said.
The victim called Ripon police, and officers went to the apartment complex. Police Sgt. Terri Jensen found Eric Covarrubias walking away from the area toward West Main Street. He was taken into custody in the Quik Stop Market parking lot.
Police officer Danny Sauer later found Augustin Covarrubias at the complex in the apartment of an acquaintance.
Ormonde said the men were identified as the burglary suspects during a lineup. They were being held at the San Joaquin County Jail on Friday afternoon. Their bail was set at $100,000 each.
