An Atwater man was arrested Monday after Merced Police investigated a report about a home-invasion robbery at East 23rd and G streets. Samuel Cisneros, 26, was found hiding in a nearby alley after the robbery was reported, police said.
Earlier, the 55-year-old victim received a phone call from two people in Atwater who wanted to purchase some ball caps that he was advertising on Craigslist. He met with the prospective buyers at his home and made a transaction, police said. As soon as they left, the victim was attacked from behind by two other people, police said.
The suspects knocked the victim to the ground, hitting him and demanding his cell phone. One of the men gathered the remaining inventory in the victim's home as the other man continued to assault him. When the suspects began unhooking the victims' television set, he began fighting back and screamed loudly. The suspects ran out of the home, one getting into the passenger side of a small silver two-door car and the other running away on foot.
Officer Nathaniel McKinnon arrived at the home and began searching the area when he found Cisneros hiding in an alleyway. Cisneros ran from the officer, but was caught after a short chase. Officers said they found Cisneros with stolen property belonging to the victim, including a digital organizer, a cell phone and handbags.
Cisneros was booked into Merced County Jail and charged with robbery, conspiracy, possession of stolen property, vandalism and resisting arrest.
Police are still seeking information about the robbery. Some of the outsanding items taken included several black "New Era" baseball caps with various team logos. Anyone with information can call the Merced Police Department Tipster Line at (209) 385-4725.
