A 53-year-old inmate was found dead Sunday in his cell at the downtown Modesto jail, officials said. Stanislaus County sheriff's Lt. Mario Cisneros said the man was booked at the county jail Saturday night on a parole violation.
Cisneros said the man is a Modesto resident but did not release his name because his family had not been notified.
He said the death does not appear to be suspicious but is being investigated. An autopsy is set for this week.
He said the man was found unresponsive in his cell about 2 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the jail later in the day. He said the man was in a cell with other inmates.
Cisneros did not know which law enforcement agency booked the man at the jail Saturday night but said the arrest appeared to be routine.
