A cockfight in rural Mariposa led to 33 arrests on Sunday.
After receiving an anonymous report of cockfighting on Heritage Lane, Mariposa County Sheriff's deputies responded to a private residence. Because of a locked gate, the officers walked onto the property and talked to a man who told deputies he was hosting a barbecue.
While the man was talking to a deputy, people began running from a structure that was located at the back of the property. After asking for more assistance, officers from the California Highway Patrol, California Fish & Game and Cal Fire responded to help with arrests.
Searches of the surrounding properties led to 33 people being arrested for animal fighting. Of the 33 people arrested, only one was a local resident. Animal control officers seized a total of 80 animals associated with the event. Due to the severity of injuries, one of the animals was euthanized at the scene.
Area residents were notified by the sheriff’s department to secure structures and vehicles while the search was being conducted.
