A crop-dusting helicopter crashed in an orchard near Escalon this afternoon. The pilot survived and was taken to a Modesto hospital with major injuries, officials said.
The pilot's name was released this evening. Bill Cavanaugh, 68, was taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto where a spokeswoman said he was in critical condition.
The helicopter was badly damaged.
Field workers pulled Cavanaugh from the plane, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 2 p.m. near the intersection of Hall and McBride roads, southeast of Escalon, north of Riverbank and west of Oakdale. The Escalon Fire District responded to the accident.
