The late Bette Belle Smith, a tireless volunteer for numerous Modesto organizations, will be honored with her own day at Tuesday night's City Council meeting.
Mayor Jim Ridenour is scheduled to proclaim the first Saturday in May as the Bette Belle Smith Day of Service.
Smith, known to many as "Mrs. Modesto," died in November at the age of 88.
Smith served many organizations, including the McHenry Museum Guild, Modesto Symphony Orchestra board of directors, Gallo Center for the Arts board of trustees, Modesto Junior College foundation board, Omega Nu, The Salvation Army, International Festival and Inter-Faith Ministries.
The city proclamation honoring Smith reads in part, "Smith's countless contributions to the people and organizations of Modesto inspired others to be of service and it is important that all of the citizens of the city of Modesto be aware of the meaning in giving and dedication to their community."
