Five area schools are among 238 California campuses that have been selected for the 2009-10 Title I Academic Achievement Award.
Honorees include Westport Elementary in Ceres, Sherwood and Standiford elementaries in north Modesto, Schendel Elementary in Delhi, and Tenaya Elementary in Tuolumne County.
The Title I Academic Achievement Award is given only to schools receiving federal Title I funds, the single largest federal educational program for K-12 public schools, focusing on students from low-income families.
Of the more than 9,000 schools in California, more than 6,000 of them participate in the Title I program.
To get the award, the school's socioeconomically disadvantaged students must have doubled the achievement targets set for them on state tests for two consecutive years.
