A 29-year-old Modesto man who threw a neighbor's baby into the air until she hit a ceiling and fell on her head was sentenced Tuesday to nine years in prison after being convicted of child abuse.
Jason Matthew Perez and his wife were baby-sitting a neighbor's 10-week-old infant in April 2006 when he tossed the child in the air and burned her foot to cover up his actions, the district attorney's office reported.
Perez urged the infant's mother to take the child to the hospital, telling her he accidentally burned her foot on a coffee pot and dropped her. The infant suffered severe head injuries and was blinded in one eye. She also needed a brace on her leg to help her walk.
Deputy District Attorney Elaine Casillas read a statement in court Tuesday from the girl's adopted parents in which they described the girl's struggles to perform simple tasks. They wrote, "Because of (her) loving, joyous spirit, she would forgive Jason Perez for what he did, and so do we as her parents."
