Question of the Week: What's your take on body piercing?

Maggie White

Valley Charter High School Freshman

I have had precisely one piercing in each ear since I was 10 years old. Being slightly scared of needles, I probably won't get other piercings anytime soon. I think that facial jewelry looks fine on other people, though, and if they take good care of the piercings, I don't see why not.

I think body piercing is a personal choice. What you want to do with your body is your business. That said, I wouldn't get it done myself — I think a piercing anywhere but my ears would hurt too much for me!

Rachel Crowley

Ripon High School Senior

Body piercing in general doesn't bother me. In fact, I've always wanted to get my nose pierced, though this suggestion has been met with resistance from my parents quite a few times. Honestly, it just strikes me as a form of expression for some people, a statement for others, and even just the desire to have something sparkly in your skin. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Although I would never get a body piercing myself, body art is pretty interesting to me. Everyone is responsible for their own bodies, so it only seems right to be able to do whatever you want with it. I think people would have a better chance of expressing themselves creatively if people didn't judge based on their body art.

Well, seeing that I have 27 piercings OK fine, I have five piercings in total, all being on my ears. I have always wanted a nose piercing, but I'm thinking I'll save that for when I go away to college. (Just kidding, Mom!) I love piercings on the ears and nose, but once you start piercing various random areas of your face, I just don't really get it anymore. All I can think when I see someone with their lips or tongue pierced is, "How do you eat with that thing on your tongue?!" or "How do you kiss with that huge diamond spike on your lip!?" Body piercing can be a cute way to add some pizzazz to your style, but when it starts taking over your face, I get a little scared.

I think that people have the right to do whatever they want to their bodies, whether that be piercing or hair color, although, while you are still under your parents' roof, you should probably listen to them, unless you want to get kicked out. However, kissing might be somewhat awkward with a lip or tongue piercing. Just saying
