Googlefy Modesto to try road show

The group that wants Google to use Modesto as a test city for its new ultrahigh-speed Internet service is taking its show on the road, literally. Googlefy Modesto will walk, bike and run from Modesto to Google's headquarters in Mountain View to raise awareness for its effort. The 96-mile pilgrimage will kick off with an 8:30 a.m. rally Saturday at Tenth Street Place, followed by a 19-mile walk. Day 2 of the trek will be a 51-mile bike ride over Mount Hamilton; Day 3 will be a 26-mile run to Mountain View. Modesto is one of hundreds of cities across the country competing for Google's attention. Many cities are trying various publicity-grabbing stunts to win Google's favor. The Internet search giant wants to provide Internet service that's 100 times faster than what most people are accustomed to. For more information, visit www.googlepilgrimage.com. -- Leslie Albrecht
