A suspicious two-alarm fire tore through a vacant Riverbank home early Wednesday, according to the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District. No injuries were reported.
The fire occurred about 3:30 a.m. at the home on Stanislaus Street, just east of Callander Avenue. Battalion Chief Paul Spani said the two-story house was being renovated. He said the fire appeared to have started near the stairway and spread to both floors. Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 45 minutes and it was completely out 30 minutes later.
Spani said the fire gutted the first floor, destroyed the stairway and damaged rooms on the second floor and in the basement. Spani said the cause had not been determined, but the blaze appeared suspicious.
The Oakdale Fire Department and Escalon Fire Protection District assisted.
