Hazmat search comes up empty in Modesto

A hazardous materials team found no toxic chemicals Wednesday after a city cleanup crew reported feeling nauseous while working in an alley in central Modesto, fire officials said.

About 11:30 a.m., the Modesto Fire Department was called to the alley, near Mills and West Roseburg avenues. The city workers were examined by medics from the Fire Department but declined further treatment.

The hazmat team used scanning monitors but found nothing toxic in the area.

Modesto fire officials said it's possible whatever made the cleanup crew sick already had dissipated into the air by the time the hazardous materials team checked the area.

Authorities remained at the scene about an hour.
