Police hunt trio in robbery at home in north Modesto

Detectives were looking for three men who broke into a north Modesto home Thursday morning, ordered the residents out of bed at gunpoint, tied them up and robbed them.

No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported, Modesto police said.

The home-invasion robbery occurred about 7 a.m. in the 3400 block of Conant Avenue, a few blocks north of Standiford Avenue.

The detectives were trying to determine whether the victims were targeted. There have been no similar robberies in that area.

"It's a nice neighborhood," said Detective Steven Stanfield, a Modesto police spokesman. "I don't know why they would target this house as opposed to the next-door neighbor."

Stanfield said the robbers broke into the home while the two residents still were asleep. The victims told detectives they awoke to guns pointed at their faces as the robbers told them to get out of bed.

The robbers were not wearing masks, but the victims could not give police a description of their faces.

"They were still sleeping when they were ordered out of bed," Stanfield said. "They're vulnerable in that situation. They probably couldn't see much."

Police described the robbers as black men wearing dark clothing.

He said the victims were tied up and remained restrained as the robbers grabbed items from the house. The detectives declined to say what the robbers used to tie the victims and what items were stolen, fearing it would harm the investigation.

The robbery lasted about 10 to 15 minutes. A few minutes after the robbers left the home, the residents freed themselves and called 911.

The victims did not know whether the robbers left in a vehicle. Stanfield said they should be considered armed and dangerous.

Detectives were at the home later in the morning gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses.
