A group of Modesto residents went on a 19-mile walk today as the first stage in a three-day trip to Google headquarters to persuade the company to set up a super-fast Internet network in Modesto.
The walkers started with a brief ceremony downtown, then walked west to Patterson.
The group plans a 51-mile bicycle ride over Mount Hamilton on Sunday and a 26-mile run Monday to Google's corporate offices in Mountain View.
Modesto is one of hundreds of cities across the country competing for Google's attention. Many cities are trying various publicity-grabbing stunts to win Google's favor. The Internet search giant wants to provide Internet service that's 100 times faster than what most people are accustomed to.
