Modesto again named 'Tree City'

Modesto last week got a green feather in its canopy when it was named a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Foundation for the 30th straight year.

Modesto has scaled back the care it gives its 110,000 street and park trees in recent years because of budget cuts, but the City Council on Tuesday is expected to hear a report on a plan to plant 4,000 more.

Modesto will celebrate its recognition and Arbor Day with a tree planting at John Muir Elementary School, 1215 Lucern Ave., on April 1 at 9 a.m.
