At the annual state mock trial competition this month, Stanislaus County's champion, the Modesto High School team, placed 13 out of 34, the team's highest ranking at the state meet.
High school students play roles from court cases and are judged by actual superior court judges. The Modesto High team included "attorneys" Adam Garzoli, Ian Peltier, Peter Hodson, Elizabeth Paiva, Rebecca Mears, Mary Corr-Barberis, Ben Kennedy and Nimrit Sidhu; "witnesses" Caroline Maner, Kristin Heinrich, Jacob Moniz, Brett Martin, Ezekiel Amador, Kyle Sharp, Ravina Cogna and Bethany Gierhan; "clerk" Carolyn Murphy; and "bailiff" John McKenzie.
The team was led by Modesto High teacher Steve Beck and attorney coaches John Peltier from Damrell, Nelson, Pallios & Schrimp and Doug Maner of the Stanislaus County district attorney's office.
