Authorities arrested a man suspected of stealing a car for sale during a test drive Wednesday evening in Ripon, police said. The apparent carjacking occurred about 6:20 p.m. near a business in the 1500 block of Colony Road, just east of Highway 99. The victim told Ripon police officers his car was parked in front of his Modesto home and was for sale. Ripon police said an unknown man contacted the car owner, telling him he was interested in the car. The owner and the prospective buyer met in Ripon for a test drive back to Modesto. After the car owner got out of his vehicle, the suspect drove off in the car. Police said the victim tried to stop the suspect, but he was knocked to the ground by the moving car. The victim suffered minor injuries. Officer Matt Ford investigated and identified the suspect as Kelly Hughes, 25, of Seymour, Ind. About 11:50 p.m., Elk Grove police spotted Hughes in the stolen car parked along Highway 99 near Grant Line Road, according to Ripon police. Hughes was arrested on suspicion of carjacking and possession of a stolen vehicle. Hughes was booked at the Sacramento County Jail, where he was being held Thursday evening. His bail was set at $100,000. Ripon police said the stolen car was recovered and will be returned to the victim.
