21 Modesto-area acts vie to open for Phil Vassar at Gallo Center

From solo singer-songwriters to multi-piece bands, 21 acts have entered a contest to become the opening act for Nashville singer-songwriter Phil Vassar when he peforms in Modesto next month.

Voting by the public began today in the contest sponsored by The Modesto Bee and the Gallo Center for the Arts, where Vassar will perform April 21 at 7 p.m.

Vassar is on tour promoting his sixth album, "Traveling Circus." He has written several chart-topping songs for himself and for country artists Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, Jo Dee Messina and Collin Raye.

To vote, you must be a registered user in the contest area, which you can reach at this link. Registered voters may vote once each day in the contest.

Voting will close April 9 and results will be sent to the Gallo Center, where a panel of judges will decide who performs a roughly 15-minute set at the center's Mary Stuart Rogers theater.
